The Election Commission of India (ECI) is set to organize a one-day workshop for Media Nodal Officers (MNOs) and Social Media Nodal Officers (SMNOs) of CEO offices of 36 States/UTs on Friday here, the poll panel said in a release.

The workshop that aims to emphasize the importance of communicating accurate and timely information to the public will underscore the need for “communicating the legal, factual and rule-based information in a timely and in a coordinated manner”, according to the ECI.

This initiative seeks to ensure that the public receives verified and authentic information about electoral processes.

The workshop is being conducted in response to the recent surge in misinformation that seeks to mislead the public with regard to electoral processes, the poll panel said. The ECI aims to strengthen the communication ecosystem of the offices of the CEOs in States/UTs in countering misleading information with fact-based responses. It will reinforce learning from previous orientation programs and chart out forward-looking strategies to ensure that electors and other stakeholders get timely, verified, and authentic information.

The workshop will be inaugurated by Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar in the presence of Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi. The event will bring together MNOs and SMNOs from across the country to discuss strategies for effective communication and misinformation management.
