The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Sunday announced a revised schedule for the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in 12 states and union territories, extending the key deadlines by one week.

As per the revised schedule, the last date for the enumeration period has been extended till December 11. Earlier, this phase was set to end on December 4.

The draft voter list, which was scheduled to be published by December 9 as per the earlier schedule, will now be published on December 16.

The final electoral rolls will now be published on February 14.

The development comes a day before the commencement of the Winter Session of Parliament, where the Opposition is likely to raise the SIR issue.

It also comes amid reports of several BLO fatalities allegedly due to intense pressure to meet tight deadlines.

Earlier on Friday, a delegation of the Trinamool Congress had met the ECI and demanded that the exercise be delayed and held in a proper manner.

The TMC delegation also flagged the issue of BLO fatalities, alleging that the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar and his team have “blood on their hands”.
