Days after the unexpected resignation of Jagdeep Dhankhar as Vice President, the Election Commission of India (ECI) on Tuesday said that it has started preparations relating to the Vice-Presidential Elections, 2025.
The announcement of the election schedule to the office of the vice president of India will be made after the completion of the preparatory activities, the ECI said in a press note.
“The Election Commission of India has already started the preparations relating to the Vice-Presidential Elections, 2025. On completion of the preparatory activities, the announcement of the Election Schedule to the office of the Vice-President of India will follow as soon as possible,” the poll panel said in its press note.
As part of its preparations for the vice president’s election, the panel has begun preparing the Electoral College, which consists of elected as well as nominated members of Rajya Sabha as well as Lok Sabha.
The ECI is also in the process of finalising the Returning Officer and Assistant Returning Officers to conduct the fair and impartial election.
Jagdeep Dhankhar, 74, tendered his resignation on Monday night, citing health reasons. In his resignation letter, Dhankhar said that he was resigning with immediate effect under Article 67(a) of the Constitution to “prioritise health care and abide by medical advice”.
BJP MP Ghanshyam Tiwari, who was in the Chair in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday, informed the House that President Draupadi Murmu has accepted his resignation.
