Tamil Nadu CM MK Stalin

Two days after a stampede at Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TK) chief and actor Vijay’s rally at Karur claimed 41 lives, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin on Monday issued an appeal to people to not spread misinformation about the incident.

“I have been seeing news on social media about fake news doing the rounds. No leader of any political party would like their people to lose their lives,” Stalin said amid strong sentiments over the incident at Vijay’s rally on Saturday.

“They are our Tamil family, and at this sad time, I request that no one spread any false news. It is also necessary to build new rules and regulations that should be followed by every political party planning a rally…,” Stalin added in a video message.

“Do not spread defamation and rumours on social media regarding the tragedy that occurred in Karur. Everyone must behave responsibly,” Stalin stated further.

Of the 41 dead, 18 were women, 10 children and the rest were men.

Asserting that everyone should make sure such tragedies never recur, the DMK chief said his government will take required action after Justice Aruna Jagadeesan, a one-member Commission instituted to inquire into the stampede incident, submits its report.

The TVK chief, meanwhile, today virtually spoke to his party’s senior leaders to discuss the next steps. Vijay had on Sunday declared a financial assistance of Rs 20 lakh to each of the bereaved families and Rs 2 lakh to the injured.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh to each of the victims’ families, from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund. Rs 50,000 were announced each for the people injured in the tragic incident.

The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister too announced compensation of Rs 10 lakh for each family of the deceased and Rs 1 lakh for each person undergoing treatment.

Among those who lost their lives in the stampede, 34 victims were from the Karur district, two each from the Erode, Tiruppur, and Dindigul districts, and one from the Salem district.
