Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Deb’s penchant for making controversial remarks seems to be increasing day after day. The BJP leader has now made headlines for trivialising the issue of unemployment in the state.

The Chief Minister, while addressing a seminar at Pragna Bhavan (Agartala) organised by Tripura Veterinary Council on the eve of World Veterinary Day, said that the youth in Tripura chase political parties to get a government job and waste time. “If the same youth instead of running after parties set up a “paan shop” he would have by now had a bank balance of Rs 5 lakhs,” he said.

While urging youth to be self-employed, Deb said other than setting-up paan shops (betel shops), “milking cows” is also another employment option.

As per The Indian Express news report, the Tripura CM said that any unemployed youth can easily earn Rs 25,000 every month with an investment of just Rs 75,000 borrowed from the bank. “But it is the culture that has grown in Tripura during the last 25 years which has become a hurdle for the youth of the state,” he said. Deb added that narrow-minded concepts like “a graduate cannot opt for farming, start poultry, or piggery because if he does so, his class will go down” has left many unemployed.

Biplab Deb, while praising PM Narendra Modi-led government’s Mudra Yojana that provides loan for small scale enterprises, said that the Centre is providing opportunities and financial support to youth. He said that due to their mindset, the educated youths do not opt for jobs in traditional sectors like agriculture.

The Tripura CM has been in the news for his controversial remarks against 1997 Miss World Diana Hayden’s skin colour. He had also said that those who have studied mechanical engineering should not prepare for civil services, whereas civil engineers are better suited for civil services as they own the prowess to build society.

Deb had also claimed that Internet and satellite communication existed in the days of Mahabharata.
