US President Donald Trump will not attend the Republic Day celebrations in India in January next year, according to a report in the Times Now.

The report added that the decision was communicated by US authorities in a letter to National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval.

Earlier in August, the United States had confirmed that President Donald Trump had been invited to visit India to be the chief guest at next year’s Republic Day celebrations in New Delhi.

“I know that the invitation has been extended, but I do not believe that a final decision has been made,” White House press secretary Sarah Sanders had told reporters then when she was asked about reports that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had invited President Trump for Republic Day celebrations in 2019.

The invitation to attend the R-day celebration to Trump was reportedly extended in April this year. Narendra Modi-government’s first Republic Day event in 2015 had the then US President Barack Obama as the chief guest.

No official statement regarding Trump declining India’s invitation has been made yet. According to media reports, officials in US officials have indicated that Trump would not visit India in January as the State of the Union address is scheduled in the winter month.
