DK Shivakumar meets Karnataka Governor, stakes claim to form govt; swearing-in ceremony on June 3

After being elected as the leader of Congress Legislative Party in Karnataka, DK Shivakumar on Saturday met state Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot and staked claim to form the new government.

Caretaker CM Siddaramaiah, former state home minister G Parameshwara and other senior Congress leaders accompanied Shivakumar to Lok Bhavan.

The Governor approved DK’s claim and invited him to form the government.

The swearing-in ceremony will take place at Vidhana Soudha on June 3, 2026, at 4:05 PM, confirmed the Lok Bhavan.

In a social media post on X, Shivakumar said that he was humbled to be unanimously elected as the Leader of the Congress Legislature Party at the CLP meeting held in Vidhana Soudha today.

Shivakumar, who served as deputy to Siddaramaiah during his three-year tenure as Karnataka Chief Minister, was earlier today elected as the new leader of the Congress Legislative Party (CLP).

During the meeting held in Vidhana Soudha’s conference hall, Siddaramaiah stepped down as the leader of the Legislative Party and moved a resolution for electing Shivakumar as the new CLP leader.

The resolution was supported by former Home Minister G Parameshwara and adopted unanimously.

AICC General Secretaries KC Venugopal and Karnataka in-charge Randeep Singh Surjewala were also present during the CLP meeting.

The development followed Siddaramaiah’s resignation as Chief Minister on May 28 on directions from Congress high-command.
