Bangladesh High Commissioner to India Reaz Hamidullah received an “urgent call” from the Bangladesh foreign ministry yesterday, as per media reports. Hamidullah reached Dhaka on Monday night in response to the call.
Media reports suggest that the envoy was summoned in view of the recent situation affecting bilateral ties with India. “He has been called to Dhaka on an urgent basis for discussions on the current state of bilateral relations,” the report added.
Bilateral tensions rise
Earlier this month, on 17 December, India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) had summoned the Bangladesh envoy to express strong concerns over the deteriorating security environment in Bangladesh.
According to the MEA, Reaz Hamidullah’s attention was drawn specifically to the activities of some extremist elements who have announced plans to create a security situation around the Indian mission in Dhaka.
India refuted the false narrative being pushed by these extremist groups regarding certain recent events in Bangladesh.
The MEA expressed concern that the Muhammad Yunus-led interim government has neither conducted a thorough investigation nor shared meaningful evidence with India regarding the incidents.
India called on the Yunus-led interim government to ensure the security of Indian missions and posts in Bangladesh in keeping with its diplomatic obligations.
