Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti on Friday sent out a strong message to the Centre saying that consequences will be dangerous if Delhi tried to break the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

“If Delhi tries to create divisions in the PDP and interfere like that, just like a Salahuddin and a Yasin Malik were born in 1987, the outcome will be dangerous. If they try the same thing now and interfere. . . if it tries to break PDP, then outcomes will be very dangerous,” she told the reporters outside the martyrs’ graveyard in Srinagar.

July 13 in Kashmir is observed as Martyrs’ Day in the state to remember Kashmiris martyred on this day by Dogra forces in 1931.  As many as 21 protesters were killed in firing by Dogra Army outside Srinagar Central Jail on 13 July 1931.

“The martyrs buried here sacrificed their lives for restoration people’s order in Kashmir. I have come here to pay my respects to these martyrs and I pray that the rights of the people, for the restoration of which they sacrificed lives, that may always last,” Mehbooba added.

Reacting strongly to the comments made by Mehbooba, former chief minister Omar Abdullah tweeted: “She must really be desperate if she is threatening the Centre with renewed militancy if PDP breaks up. She seems to have forgotten that militancy in Kashmir has already been reborn under her most able administration.”

“Let me put this out here for all to remember NOT ONE NEW MILITANT WILL BE CREATED WITH THE BREAK UP OF THE PDP. People will not mourn the demise of a party created in Delhi only to divide the votes of Kashmiris,” the National Conference vice-president added.

The BJP too came down heavily on the former alliance leader saying Mehbooba had “exposed” her proximity to separatists.

Union Minister of Minority Affairs Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said Mufti with her statement was “trying to give oxygen to terrorists”.

“Knowing or unknowingly she has only exposed her proximity to separatists,” said the BJP leader said.
