Delhi Police issue traffic advisory for New Year’s Eve: Restrictions, diversions & parking curbs – Know it all

As New Year’s Eve celebrations gather momentum in the national capital, the Delhi Traffic Police have put in place elaborate traffic arrangements to manage the anticipated rush on 31 December at key hotspots.

Special restrictions, diversions, and parking regulations will be effective across popular locations to ensure public safety and smooth traffic flow.

To prevent traffic violations on the roads, more than 50 checkpoints have been set up to conduct checks for drunk driving. Sixty party areas and malls have been identified where checking will be carried out. Also, authorities have identified several congestion-prone areas, including Connaught Place and India Gate, where large crowds are expected to gather to welcome the New Year 2026. Additional traffic personnel will be deployed near popular markets, celebration venues, and arterial roads to regulate movement and prevent bottlenecks.

 

Delhi Police warns against drunk driving

In a special appeal on social media platform X, the Delhi Police urged citizens to avoid drunk driving and intoxication during New Year celebrations. The post featured a message from renowned singer Sunidhi Chauhan, encouraging responsible celebration and road safety.

The police have reiterated that strict action will be taken against traffic violations to ensure a safe and joyful New Year for all.

Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic), Zone 1, Monika Bhardwaj, said that around 100 checkpoints will be set up across Delhi to curb drunken driving.

In terms of deployment, around 1,200 traffic police personnel will be on duty specifically for New Year’s Eve management, while the overall police deployment across the city will be approximately 2,500 personnel to maintain law and order and ensure a safe celebration.

Connaught Place: Restrictions from 7 PM onwards

Given the massive footfall expected at Connaught Place, special traffic restrictions will be imposed from 7:00 PM on 31 December.

Vehicular movement will be completely prohibited in the inner, middle, and outer circles of Connaught Place, except for vehicles carrying valid passes. Entry from Connaught Place towards Chelmsford Road will be prohibited.

Limited parking will be available near Connaught Place on a first-come, first-served basis. Unauthorized or improperly parked vehicles will be towed and prosecuted.

TRAFFIC RESTRICTIONS: No vehicle shall be allowed to proceed towards Connaught Place beyond:

India Gate: Restrictions amid heavy footfall

At and around India Gate, traffic arrangements have been strengthened to manage both pedestrian and vehicular movement. In case of heavy crowding, vehicles may be barred from entering the C-Hexagon area.

Due to limited parking, visitors are advised to use public transport. With large crowds expected near the Delhi Zoo, motorists are urged to avoid Bhairon Road and Mathura Road between Hazrat Nizamuddin and Pragati Maidan to prevent congestion.

Public advisory for commuters

The Delhi Traffic Police have urged commuters to avoid restricted roads, plan their journeys well in advance, and allow extra time if travelling to ISBTs, railway stations, or airports. Motorists are also advised to follow traffic rules, maintain road discipline, and comply with instructions from traffic personnel.
