The Delhi Police solved a high-profile fraud case within 48 hours by arresting three individuals impersonating as Enforcement Directorate (ED) officers to dupe a car showroom manager of Rs 30 lakh, it said on Tuesday.

The accused are identified as Sunil Kumar Taneja (46), Suraj (22) and Sumit Yadav (25), who were involved in duping the manager, a senior officer mentioned.

“On June 20, Anil Tiwari, Assistant Manager in a private company, was intercepted by two individuals while commuting home. The duo claimed to be ED officers, later abducted him and took him to the showroom,” the officer added.

They stole Rs 30 lakhs from a Bentley car’s boot. The accused then dropped Tiwari near Rajokari on NH-8. With this information, an FIR was registered, and a team was formed to investigate the case further.

While probing, the cops analysed the CCTV footage that revealed a Wagon-R car with a partially obscured license plate, which led the police to the registered owner’s residence in Vijay Enclave, Dabri.

Further investigation into this case led to the arrest of Sunil Kumar Taneja, the main accused, on Saturday from Gurugram. Two other accused, Suraj and Sumit Yadav, were arrested on Monday and Tuesday, the officer added.

“The police have recovered Rs 15 lakhs in cash from Taneja, Rs 8 lakhs in fixed deposit, a fake ED document used as a search warrant, and two cars – one used in the crime and the other purchased with the stolen money,” the officer added.

A case has been registered against the trio under the relevant sections of the BNS.
