Delhi Capitals will aim to continue their strong start to the season when they take on Gujarat Titans in their IPL 2026 clash here on Wednesday, though the focus within the camp will be on getting more consistency from their top order.
Despite winning both their opening matches, Delhi’s batting has largely revolved around the in-form Sameer Rizvi, who has emerged as the standout performer early in the season. The 22-year-old has shown maturity beyond his years, combining composure with calculated aggression. His ability to accelerate against both pace and spin has been a key factor in Delhi’s success so far, but the team management will be keen to avoid over-reliance on a single batter.
The spotlight, therefore, shifts to KL Rahul and the rest of the top order. Rahul has looked composed in his brief outings but is yet to convert his starts into a substantial score. Given his experience and ability to anchor an innings, it is only a matter of time before he finds his rhythm, something that could significantly strengthen Delhi’s batting.
At No. 3, Nitish Rana faces increasing pressure to deliver, having been entrusted with a key role in the lineup. Meanwhile, Pathum Nissanka comes into the game with renewed confidence after finding form in the previous outing. His approach in the powerplay will be crucial, especially against a potent Gujarat pace attack.
The conditions at the Arun Jaitley Stadium could add another dimension to the contest. While the venue is traditionally known for high-scoring matches, the pitch has shown signs of being slightly tricky, with variable bounce making timing difficult, especially early in the innings. A total in the range of 170–180 could prove competitive.
Meanwhile, Delhi’s bowling unit has been their biggest strength so far. Mukesh Kumar has impressed with his discipline and ability to strike at key moments, while captain Axar Patel continues to lead from the front with his all-round contributions. Axar’s effectiveness in both the powerplay and middle overs has added control, while the presence of Lungi Ngidi, T Natarajan and Kuldeep Yadav provides variety and depth to the attack.
In contrast, Gujarat Titans have struggled to find momentum, with issues in both batting and bowling departments. Their batting continues to be heavily reliant on the top order, and while Sai Sudharsan has provided solid starts, the middle order has not been able to capitalise.
The onus will be on players like Glenn Phillips, Washington Sundar and Rahul Tewatia to step up and deliver under pressure. Their inability to convert promising situations into match-winning contributions has been a key factor behind Gujarat’s slow start.
There is, however, some positive news for the Titans, with skipper Shubman Gill expected to return after missing the previous game due to a muscle spasm. Stand-in captain Rashid Khan had indicated that Gill should be fit, which could provide a much-needed boost to the side.
The bowling unit, too, has lacked consistency. Mohammed Siraj and Kagiso Rabada have been slightly expensive, while Prasidh Krishna has struggled to find rhythm. On the brighter side, Rashid Khan has looked in good touch, and young pacer Ashok Sharma has shown promise.
