A Congress delegation, led by MP Deepender Hooda, visited the home of late IPS officer Puran Kumar on Monday to pay tribute. He said the wheels of justice have not moved at the pace they should in the last four to five days.
“The family is not satisfied with the action taken so far. The satisfaction of the nation and society lies in the family’s satisfaction. The entire country, including the SC community, is looking to the state and national governments to ensure that justice is delivered and the culprits are punished severely,” he said.
“The government should ensure that the family receives justice, there is no delay; justice is visible, and no one can influence the investigation. Until the family receives justice, we will fight at every level as a responsible Opposition,” he added.
Deepender said Puran Kumar was a senior and promising IPS officer of the rank of ADGP.
“During the farmers’ protest, the government had ordered him to be strict with the farmers, even to open fire, but he refused to obey the government’s orders. When such a person is forced to take such a step as suicide, one can imagine what must be going on,” he noted.
“Allegations of harassment, caste discrimination, and torture against the most senior officers in the police force, the chief guardians of law and order, raise serious questions about the entire system. Today, the entire system is under suspicion. When the very people who deliver justice are under the scanner, it is natural for the entire system to be questioned. This system failed to deliver justice even to its own promising IPS officer,” he stated.
Hooda demanded that a fair and independent investigation is possible only if an SIT is conducted under the supervision of a sitting Supreme Court judge, so that the truth can be revealed and those identified as guilty receive the harshest punishment.
The government’s primary responsibility in this matter is to restore public confidence in the system, and this will only happen when the family receives justice, he said.
MP Varun Mulana, MP Satpal Brahmachari, retired IAS officer and MLA Chandra Prakash Jangra were also present in the delegation.
