A day after the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) exited NDA, Andhra Pradesh BJP legislators on Saturday held a crucial meeting with Amit Shah to chalk out the party’s strategy in the state with just a little over a year to go for assembly polls.

The delegation of legislators was led by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) National Spokesperson GVL Narasimha Rao, who hails from Andhra Pradesh.

Incidentally, barely hours after TDP quit the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA), Rao had termed it a “time opportunity” for the saffron party to make inroads into Andhra Pradesh.

In a tweet, Rao had said: “TDP’s decision to quit was inevitable after its mischievous propaganda against Centre. People of AP have now realised that the TDP is resorting to lies to cover up its inept and inert governance.”

“Far from being a threat, TDP’s exit is a timely opportunity for the BJP to grow in AP (Andhra Pradesh),” he said.

TDP pulled out of the alliance and went on to move a no-confidence motion against the government over its refusal to grant special category status to the state.

Chief Minister and TDP President N. Chandrababu Naidu took the decisions during a teleconference with the politburo mesenior party leaders and MPs on Friday.

On March 8, the TDP had pulled its two ministers — Ashok Gajapathi Raju and YS Chowdary — out of the Narendra Modi government but had stopped short of walking out of the alliance.

The TDP is the first party to leave the coalition since it came to power at the Centre in 2014.

In the 175-member Andhra Pradesh Assmebly, the BJP has four legislators. It also has two MPs from the state.
