Two militants belonging to the Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) outfit were killed on Wednesday in a gunfight with the security forces in Jammu and Kashmir’s Shopian district, police said.

The identity of both militants killed in Mamender village has been established, an officer said.

“Firing exchanges have stopped. Searches were underway in the area. It was a clean operation. No collateral damage or injury to any civilian or security force personnel occurred,” the police officer added.

Following specific information about militant presence a joint operation by the Rashtriya Rifles, Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and the special operations group (SOG) of state police was started earlier in the day in Mamender.

As the cordon around the hiding militants was tightened, they fired triggering the encounter, the officer said.

The exchange of fire comes a day after India bombed and destroyed JeM’s biggest training camp in Balakot in Pakistan’s restive Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, about 80-km from the Line of Control (LoC) early Tuesday, killing a “very large number” of terrorists, trainers and senior commanders.

In a 21-minute offensive, 12 Mirage 2000 jets carried out the strike at around 3.30 am and dropped 1000 Kg bombs on terror camps across LOC, completely destroying it.

The camp in Balakot was led by Maulana Yusuf Azhar alias Ustad Ghauri, brother-in-law of JeM Chief Masood Azhar. Yusuf Azhar was on the Interpol list and among the most wanted in India.

According to reports over 300 terrorists were killed in the assault.

Tension has heightened between India and Pakistan following the IAF airstrikes. Heavy shelling was reported at several areas in Jammu and Kashmir along the Line of Control.

Five soldiers were injured in shelling by Pakistani troops along the Line of Control (LoC) between Akhnoor in Jammu and Poonch on Tuesday.

The five Army personnel were injured at Keri Lalyali in Akhnoor.

The Indian Army has been strongly retaliated to the shelling.
