After Cyclone Montha battered parts of Andhra Pradesh earlier this month, a new weather threat, Cyclone Senyar, is taking shape over the Bay of Bengal. As per Meteorologists, Senyar could potentially trigger intense rainfall, strong winds, and turbulent seas across island territories and sections of South India. The threat has prompted authorities to urge coastal residents to stay alert as the situation evolves.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has identified a well-marked low-pressure area over the Strait of Malacca and the adjoining South Andaman Sea, which is gradually strengthening. The system is likely to reach cyclonic storm intensity by November 26.
Andaman & Nicobar to see the earliest impact
Among all regions, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands are likely to face the storm’s first and most immediate weather effects. Rainfall activity intensified from November 23 and is expected to continue through November 28. The Nicobar region is forecast to receive heavy to very heavy showers (105–204 mm in 24 hours) on November 24–25, accompanied by winds of 35–45 km/hr, gusting up to 55–65 km/hr. With sea conditions likley to worsen, fishermen have been alerted not to go into the surrounding waters until further notice.
Heavy rainfall expected in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and nearby coasts
As Senyar strengthens, its outer layers are already influencing weather patterns across southern India. Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Puducherry, and coastal Andhra Pradesh have all been placed under heavy rainfall alerts. Tamil Nadu, in particular, may experience heavy to very heavy downpours from November 23 to 25, prompting school closures across multiple districts. Thunderstorms, lightning, and moderate rainfall are likely in isolated areas through the weekend.
Possible landfall window as per weather agencies
Weather agencies indicate that Cyclone Senyar could approach the coastline between Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh sometime between November 27 and 30. Authorities in Chennai and other coastal districts have advised residents to keep track of IMD’s daily advisories. The weather agency has alerted the residents to prepare for disruptions to power, transport, and essential services.
As the storm continues to develop, emergency teams and monitoring agencies remain on high alert, urging the public to stay informed and follow all official safety instructions.
