CWG: Kovind lauds Venkat Rahul Ragala on clinching gold for India

President Ram Nath Kovind on Saturday congratulated weightlifter Venkat Rahul Ragala on clinching a gold medal in the men’s 85kg competition at the Commonwealth Games.

“Another Gold for India in weightlifting at #GC2018 What an achievement by Venkat Rahul Ragala…Congratulations!!,” tweeted Kovind.

With Ragala’s win, India’s tally of gold medals at the 21st edition of CWG now stands at four in addition to a silver and bronze medal at the ongoing 21st edition of CWG.

Indian weightlifters are in an outstanding form and have won a total of six medals.

Earlier in the day, Sathish Kumar Sivalingam won gold in the men’s 77-kg category while on Friday, Sanjita Chanu too won a gold medal in the women’s 53 kilogram category as the Manipuri star lifted a total of 192 kg which included a CWG record of 84 kg in the snatch and 108 kg in clean and jerk.

Mirabai Chanu was the first gold medal winner for India, on the opening day, in the women’s 48 kg category.

Weightlifter P Gururaja opened India’s medal account on the first competition day, claiming silver in the men’s 56kg category followed by a bronze medal clinched by Deepak Lather in the men’s 69 kilogram competition.
