As India bagged two back to back medals at the ongoing 21st Commonwealth Games (CWG) on Friday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his elation and said that Indian weightlifters were in “superb form”.

The day began with weightlifter Sanjita Chanu winning a gold medal in the women’s 53 kilogram category followed by a bronze medal clinched by Deepak Lather in the men’s 69 kilogram competition.

“Our weightlifters are in superb form! My young friend Deepak Lather wins a Bronze in the Men’s 69 kg category. Congratulations to this youngster and all the best for his future endeavours,” Modi tweeted.

Lather continued the superb performance by Indian weightlifters as he bagged the bronze medal by lifting 136 kilograms in the snatch and 159 kg in clean and jerk for a total of 295 kg.

Earlier in the day, Modi had congratulated Chanu and said that the nation was overjoyed by her “exemplary performance”.

“A second Gold for India! Congratulations to K Sanjita Chanu on winning the Gold Medal in the Women’s 53 kg weightlifting event. The nation is overjoyed by this exemplary performance.”

Sanjita Chanu won gold in the women’s 53 kilogram category as the Manipuri star lifted a total of 192 kg which included a CWG record of 84 kg in the snatch and 108 kg in clean and jerk.

Sanjita was by far the most dominant competitor in both snatch and clean jerk. She took the lead in the snatch with an opening attempt of 81 kilograms.
