The Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) is expected to seek a detailed report from the Kerala government regarding the attack on vehicles carrying Enforcement Directorate (ED) officials by CPM workers in Thiruvananthapuram, which constituted a major security breach.
A violent clash erupted at Bakery Junction outside the rented residence of former Kerala chief minister and current Opposition Leader Pinarayi Vijayan immediately after the Central agency concluded a seven-hour-long raid
CPM cadres, along with SFI and DYFI activists, surrounded the agency’s convoy in protest. The mob used bricks and stones to smash the windshields and windows of three ED vehicles, which included women officers on board.
Four ED officials suffered injuries—including eye trauma from shattered glass—alongside eight escorting CRPF personnel and a driver. The Thiruvananthapuram City Police faced heavy criticism for remaining passive onlookers during the incident, failing to anticipate the volatile gathering, and failing to safely secure the exit route.
There is also criticism that the police failed to foresee the possibility of a conflict at the scene. The criticism is that the Thiruvananthapuram City Police seriously lapsed by not deploying sufficient police at the scene. The ED’s vehicle being allowed to pass through the crowd is also considered a security breach.
The ED has officially initiated strict legal action and filed a formal police complaint following an attack on its team in Kerala. Its officials reached the Thampanoor Police Station in Thiruvananthapuram to file a first information report (FIR) against the perpetrators. The agency is pushing for non-bailable criminal charges, including attempted murder and obstruction of public servants from discharging their duties, against the identifiable attackers.
Following a complaint from the ED officials, the Thampanoor Police in Thiruvananthapuram registered a criminal case against CPM, DYFI and SFI workers. They took several of their workers into custody, including SFI State Secretary P S Sanjeev.
