The CPM Kannur district committee meeting on Saturday, which followed a district secretariat meeting, witnessed unprecedented and sharp criticism against the party’s top leadership following the Left Democratic Front’s (LDF) crushing defeat in the May 2026 Kerala Assembly elections.
Following a green light from the state secretariat allowing every member to speak out freely, district committee members broke their usual silence to directly blame senior leaders for the massive electoral setback. The “openness” witnessed in the meeting was a direct result of a specific directive from the state secretariat, which officially granted all members the opportunity to voice their concerns without fear of disciplinary action.
District committee members specifically faulted the leadership for alienating popular leaders like P. Jayarajan and K.K. Shailaja, while questioning the party’s direction under M.V. Govindan and Pinarayi Vijayan.
Committee members launched a scathing attack on the leadership, specifically naming party General Secretary M.A. Baby, Pinarayi Vijayan, and M.V. Govindan while detailing their failures.
Members fiercely cross-examined M.A. Baby’s public statements that there was “no anti-incumbency sentiment” and that nothing anti-Pinarayi had affected the election outcomes.
Members directly labelled Pinarayi Vijaya’s authoritarian leadership style and dismissive public behaviour as major liabilities that alienated voters.
They said that the Chief Minister’s authoritarian style has created disdain among the people. The justifications offered after electoral defeats are annoying. Statements like the party’s foundation has not been broken, and the other party has not gained votes, etc., are not convincing explanations for the defeat. Leaders should be prepared to conduct accurate, factual analysis, they said.
Members accused the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) of being completely disconnected from the party’s grassroots rank and file.
Targeting state secretary M.V. Govindan, members alleged that he prioritised personal and familial agendas over organisational needs. They specifically cited his backing of his wife, P.K. Shyamala, for the Taliparamba election—a controversial decision that led to a significant defeat against a party rebel.
Members also blamed the leadership for failing to read the negative undercurrent against the LDF. They warned that if the leadership does not correct its course, the grassroots cadres will take matters into their own hands, a shift they noted is already visible in the party’s strongholds. This is the first time such harsh criticism has been made in the district committee.
Meanwhile, the CPM Pathanamthitta district committee members fiercely criticised the government-backed Global Ayyappa Sangamam, labelling it a “massive strategic mistake” that directly contributed to the LDF’s electoral setback.
During an internal party review meeting following election defeats, committee members vocally asserted that the Left Democratic Front (LDF) administration should have never organised or associated with the event.
Committee members said that organising a religious summit directly contradicted the core principles and foundational ideology of the Left party. They noted that the sudden shift failed to convince the public and alienated the party’s standard support base.
Members strongly questioned the state leadership’s silence and delayed disciplinary action regarding the Sabarimala gold case allegations involving former Travancore Devaswom Board (TDB) president A. Padmakumar. They argued that by waiting for a formal chargesheet to be filed before taking any action, the leadership had left local party workers defenceless against opposition campaigns.
