The Communist Party of India (Marxist) on Wednesday strongly condemned both the Trinamool Congress-led West Bengal government and the BJP-led Central government for their alleged failure to address Kolkata’s growing flood vulnerability.
In a statement, the CPI(M) Polit Bureau said the devastating floods in the city were not merely the result of heavy rains but also of “systemic negligence and the deliberate erosion of public infrastructure” by the state government.
The party alleged that both governments place “profit over people,” spending crores on beautification drives and corporate-driven “smart city” projects while neglecting basic infrastructure. “Drains remain clogged, natural water bodies have been filled up, wetlands destroyed, and disaster preparedness reduced to token announcements,” it said.
The CPI(M) demanded adequate compensation for the families of those killed in the floods and called for relief and rehabilitation on a war footing. “The Polit Bureau calls upon all its units in West Bengal to immediately engage in providing relief and rehabilitation to the affected people with the active intervention of red volunteers,” the statement added.
The party also conveyed its condolences to the bereaved families and expressed solidarity with all those affected.
