A Delhi court on Monday granted three days of police custody to three students, while sending a fourth to judicial custody, in connection with the protests at India Gate on November 23.
The Delhi Police sought a 10-day custodial remand for four protestors Kranti Grover, Gurkirat, Ravjot and Aayesha.
In its remand application, the police accused the protesters of raising “anti-national” slogans and alleged links to the banned Radical Students Union (RSU). The police cited grounds for custody, including the need to unearth a conspiracy via WhatsApp groups, identify funding sources, trace the origin of the pepper spray, and travel to Hyderabad to investigate connections to a commemorative event.
The court, however, granted three days of police custody remand to Kranti alias Priyansh Singh, Ravjot Kaur, and Gurkirat Kaur. A fourth accused, Ayishah Wafiyath Midhath, was sent to judicial custody. The investigation in the case continues.
The police have registered two FIRs under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) following an incident where a group of protesters, associated with organizations like BSCEM and others under the banner of the ‘Delhi Coordination Committee for Clean Air’, allegedly clashed with police personnel. The protestors allegedly raised pro Naxals slogans.
A total of 23 students were placed under arrest by the police.
