Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju on Tuesday said the election of the Constitution Club of India is a “non-political” event, which has no place for “party-baazi”.
The election for the post of secretary of the Constitution Club of India (CCI) was conducted during the day, with Sanjeev Kumar Balyan and Rajiv Pratap Rudy contesting it.
“The Constitution Club election is not political. There is no meaning of ‘party-baazi’ here,” Rijiju told reporters.
MPs across party lines, including Union ministers Amit Shah, J P Nadda and others, cast their votes.
Established in 1948, the Constitution Club of India aims to foster social contact and provide the usual amenities of club life for the benefit of the members of the Indian Constituent Assembly.
It is headed by the Speaker of Lok Sabha, along with the executive body comprising sitting and former Members of Parliament.
Later, interacting with the media persons, Balyan said that the results of the election don’t matter, but the “dignity” of the Constitution Club should remain intact.
Balyan, contesting alongside Rudy, recalled that the club was established to encourage discussions above party politics.
“Whatever the results, the dignity of this constitutional club remains intact. It is a platform for MPs and former MPs. It was formed to have discussions by rising above party lines. Good discussions take place here. It is a good thing that this club is in the news again,” he told media persons.
Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Shatrughan Sinha said that he had not witnessed such excitement in any other election across the party.
“It was a good experience. I haven’t seen such excitement in any election so far, cutting across party lines”, Sinha said.
BJP MP Nishikant Dubey also hailed the enthusiasm in the Constitution Club election, saying that he has not seen such a crowd in the past 25 years.
