The Opposition Congress has found itself in a deep soup over its claim that Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s wife Rinki Bhuyan Sarma holds three passports, including two from Muslim countries.
While Himanta’s wife has filed a case against the Congress party and its leader Pawan Khera, who made the claim during a press briefing, Ministry of External Affairs (MoS) Pabitra Margherita has also rejected them.
She said that the documents shown by the Congress leader during his press briefing were “false and fabricated”.
“The Congress and its leader Pawan Khera, along with state party chief Gaurav Gogoi, had shown certain documents, passports, etc against the honourable CM’s wife and said that these passports were of three foreign countries,” Margherita said.
The MoS further stated that the MEA carried out an investigation and found the Congress claims were false.
“As the Minister of State for External Affairs, I want to say that through our diplomatic channels and investigation, we have come to know that these are fake and fabricated,” Margherita told reporters in Jorhat.
Assam BJP files complaint against Kharge over ‘hate speech’
Meanwhile, the Assam unit of the BJP has filed a complaint with the Election Commission of India against Congress national president Mallikarjun Kharge over his remarks during a recent poll rally in Nilambazar.
The BJP has also filed a First Information Report (FIR) against Kharge at the Basistha Police Station in Guwahati over the remarks.
Assam BJP spokesperson Pranjal Kalita alleged that the remarks amounted to “hate speech”. He further added that Kharge deliberately attempted to “undermine Sanatan culture” while projecting “other religions in a superior light”.
“The Assam Pradesh Bharatiya Janata Party strongly condemns the deeply offensive and irresponsible remarks made during an election rally on April 6 at Nilambazar in Sribhumi district, which amounted to an outright insult to Hindu beliefs and traditions,” he added.
