Helium balloons urging electors to vote on 26 April dot Jammu skyline
District Magistrate and Returning Officer Sachin Kumar Vaishya said these balloons have been raised to spread awareness among the voters.
The Congress party won the by-election for Gurdaspur parliamentary seat, as its candidate Sunil Jakhar wrested the seat by a margin of over 1.9 lakh votes, said media reports on Sunday.
The BJP’s Swaran Salaria was second, while the AAP’s Major General (retd) Suresh Khajuria came third, said media reports.
Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh congratulated Sunil Jakhar on his victory.

Punjab Chief minister Capt Amarinder Singh said in a tweet that Congress party “assures that all hat every single promise made by Sunil Jakharwill be fulfilled and all development works will be fast-tracked.”

Punjab CM also said that Gurdaspur by-poll win marks the “revival” of Congress party.

Earlier, Congress candidate Sunil Jakhar, who is also Punjab Congress Chief, was leading is leading in all the nine assembly constituencies, as per initial trends available.
The counting had begun at 8 am.
Two counting centres were set up for the counting of votes.
For six assembly constituencies of Gurdaspur district, counting center were set up at Sukhjindra College Gurdaspur and for three assembly constituencies of Pathankot district, counting centre were set up at the SD College in Pathankot.
The Gurdaspur Lok Sabha seat has nine Assembly segments — Bhoa, Pathankot, Gurdaspur, Dinanagar, Qadian, Fathegarh Churian, Dera Baba Nanak, Sujanpur and Batala.
