The Congress party on Sunday expressed “very grave concern” over recent US actions in Venezuela, warning that unilateral measures violate international law and pose a threat to global stability.

Senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said the developments were “deeply troubling” and underscored the dangers of bypassing multilateral norms.

“The INC expresses very grave concern over US actions relating to Venezuela in the past 24 hours. Settled principles of international law cannot be violated unilaterally,” Ramesh said in a post on X.

The party emphasised that respect for national sovereignty and non-interference in internal affairs are foundational pillars of the international system.

“Any action affecting a sovereign nation must be undertaken through established multilateral mechanisms and in accordance with the United Nations Charter,” Ramesh added.

The Congress’s remarks come amid heightened international tensions following US military action targeting Venezuela, which has drawn sharp reactions from several governments and political parties.

The party stressed the need to prioritise dialogue and diplomacy over coercion, citing India’s long-standing foreign policy principles.

“India has historically stood for the peaceful resolution of disputes and respect for sovereignty. These principles are more relevant than ever in the current global climate,” the party said, cautioning that unilateral actions by powerful nations set a dangerous precedent.

The Congress has called on the international community to work collectively to de-escalate tensions and ensure that the rights and dignity of the Venezuelan people are protected.
