The Opposition Congress staged protests in Indore, in Madhya Pradesh on Tuesday against the BJP state government over the deaths due to consumption of contaminated water of Narmada river supplied by the Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC) through taps in households of the Bhagirathpura locality in the city.
MP Congress Chief Jitu Patwari and Leader of the Opposition in the state assembly Umang Singhar led the protests.
The Congress leaders met the bereaved families of some of the deceased in the matter.
Patwari alleged that the actual death toll exceeded the reported 17 deaths. He demanded the resignations of MP Urban Development Minister Kailash Vijayvargiya, and Mayor Pushyamitra Bhargava.
The affected Bhagirapthpura locality is part of the Assembly constituency of Kailash Vijayvargiya.
He also questioned the role of Chief Minister Dr Mohan Yadav, who is the in-charge minister of Indore.
Patwari lamented that the state government’s compensation of Rs two lakh to the kin of each deceased was inadequate, and demanded that each bereaved family must be paid Rs one crore.
Umang Singhar averred that the Congress would bring out all the facts about the incident, which the state government and administration are hiding.
