The Congress on Friday paid tribute to the national song ‘Vande Mataram’ on its 150th anniversary, hailing it as a symbol of India’s unity, strength, and devotion to the motherland. In a message, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge said, “Vande Mataram is not just a song; it is a symbol of our nation’s unity and diversity. It has been a powerful force in our freedom struggle and continues to evoke national pride and unity.”
Kharge criticised the BJP and RSS for their alleged lack of commitment to the national song, saying, “It is ironic that those who claim to be the custodians of nationalism have never sung ‘Vande Mataram’ or our national anthem, ‘Jan Gan Man,’ in their gatherings. Instead, they sing ‘Namaste Sada Vatsale’, which is a song that glorifies their organisation, not the nation.”
The Congress has a long history of association with ‘Vande Mataram’, having adopted it as a national song in 1938. The party has consistently emphasised the importance of the song in promoting national unity and pride.
“Vande Mataram has been a unifying force for all Indians, transcending regional, linguistic, and cultural boundaries,” said Kharge. “The Congress Party remains committed to upholding the values of unity, integrity, and patriotism enshrined in this iconic song.”
The Congress has also announced plans to organise various events and programmes to commemorate the 150th anniversary of ‘Vande Mataram’, including a mass recitation of the song across the country.
