Congress spokesperson Priyanka Chaturvedi on Sunday received on Twitter a rape threat directed at her 10-year-old daughter after which she contacted the Mumbai Police and sought help.

A Twitter handle, which goes by the name of @GirishK1605, tagged the Congress leader and wrote that he wanted to rape her daughter. In a tweet, Chaturvedi pointed out that the Twitter handle used an image of Lord Rama as his display picture and yet made such a deplorable comment.

Support for Chaturvedi against the troll flowed in thick and strong with Twitter users suggesting her to contact the police.

Later, she filed a complaint with the Mumbai Police after which the account in question was taken down. The Mumbai Police assured her of swift action into the matter.

Earlier, an alleged fake quote attributed to Chaturvedi had been posted on Facebook. According to the quote, it was made to see that Chaturvedi supported the accused in the the horrific gang-rape of a seven-year-old in Madhya Pradesh’s Mandsaur. The harassment began after the quote went viral on social media.

This has come at a time when Indian External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj is also fighting a lone battle against the online trolls. She even posted a Twitter poll asking people if they approved of such trolling, and the results were shocking.

Over 40% people on her Twitter poll actually supported the trolls, proving to be a glaring example of how freedom of expression is misused on social media.

Sushma Swaraj became the target of trolls over action taken against a regional passport officer in Lucknow on the complaint of an inter-faith couple, as Twitter users accused her of Muslim appeasement.
