Lambasting the previous Aam Aadmi Party government and the present BJP Government in Delhi for shortage of colleges and seats under Delhi University, Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee president Devender Yadav said that due to this students from poor, underprivileged and backward classes families are forced to take admissions in private universities by paying exorbitant fees.

Stating that because of the issue, children from poor families are denied quality higher education, Yadav said and added that the AAP government and the BJP deliberately allowed private universities to flourish at the expense of children from humble social backgrounds like Dalits, backward classes and the marginalized.

“The Congress government had taken many key initiatives in the education sector like expansion of the Indraprastha University, opening of Ambedkar University, setting up of National Law School establishing a technical university and a residential sports university, because of which students opt for varied courses in the Capital,” he said.

He further stated that the Congress government, during its 15-year tenure in Delhi, had established 6 Universities and 30 new colleges.

“The previous Kejriwal government and now the BJP government politicized the education sector so much so that students from poor families are unable to secure admissions in the limited number of seats in the colleges under Delhi University,” he said adding that the Kejriwal government even starved the 12 colleges under the Delhi government by holding up their grants, and as a result, the colleges could not even pay the salaries of the teachers and staff, which affected teaching in these colleges and, in turn, the future of children.

He asked the present government to establish more new colleges in rural and trans Yamuna areas so that students from poor families are also able to get quality higher education.
