The Congress on Tuesday, July 7, signalled the start of its campaign for the Punjab Assembly elections 2027, with AICC General Secretary in-charge of Punjab, Bhupesh Baghel, holding a strategy meeting with District Congress Committee (DCC) presidents and senior party leaders in Chandigarh.

Addressing the meeting, Baghel said the party was positioning itself as the principal political alternative in Punjab and claimed the party was witnessing growing organisational cohesion ahead of the next Assembly elections.

He alleged that the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) had failed to deliver on its promises and accused the state government of mismanaging governance and finances. He also asserted that traditional rivals, including the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), had failed to emerge as a credible alternative in the state.

Calling on party functionaries to strengthen the organisation at the grassroots, Baghel described DCC presidents as the backbone of the Congress’ district-level structure and said they would be entrusted with greater responsibility in the run-up to the elections.

The meeting formed part of Baghel’s five-day organisational tour of Punjab, during which he is scheduled to interact with senior leaders, office-bearers and workers across the state to review the party’s preparedness.

Separately, Sukhwinder Singh Danny and Dr Raj Kumar Verka formally assumed charge as Working Presidents of the Punjab Congress in the presence of Baghel. Shuvam Devgan also took charge as the newly elected President of the Punjab Youth Congress.

Earlier in the day, Baghel held consultations with several senior Congress leaders, including Leader of the Opposition Partap Singh Bajwa, Punjab Congress President Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, Vijay Inder Singla, Sukhpal Singh Khaira, Rana K. P. Singh, Brahm Mohindra, Balbir Singh Sidhu, Shamsher Singh Dullo and other office-bearers to discuss the party’s organisational roadmap.

Party leaders later expressed confidence that the Congress was strengthening its organisational structure and would enter the 2027 electoral contest with a united leadership and cadre.
