The Congress party Monday demanded the resignation of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath over the brutal lynching of a Dalit youth in Raebareli, alleging a total collapse of law and order in the state with rising atrocities on Dalits, women, and Muslims.
Addressing a press conference at the AICC headquarters, Congress leaders Rajinder Pal Gautam and Imran Masood alleged that criminals are having a free run in the state, with no fear of the law.
“When a Dalit youth was beaten to death in front of cameras in Raebareli, and when he mentioned Rahul Gandhi while dying, the attackers mocked him,” Gautam said, adding, “This is a clear indication of the law and order situation in the state.”
Gautam demanded Rs 1 crore each in compensation for the families of the victims and sought fast-track court trials for such cases.
The Congress leaders alleged that the Yogi government has failed to maintain law and order, with crimes against Dalits, women, and Muslims on the rise. Imran Masood claimed that the Constitution of the country is under threat and that the BJP is patronizing those who spread hatred and violence. “It is not the rule of the law that is prevailing in the country, but the rule of the BJP’s ideology,” he said.
The Congress party has announced that it would constitute a fact-finding team to investigate such incidents and release a report. Party leader Rahul Gandhi has already spoken to the victim’s family, and Amethi MP KL Sharma and PCC president Ajay Rai have visited the family.
