The Congress on Monday launched a scathing attack on the Election Commission, accusing it of brazen non-compliance with the Supreme Court’s directive to accept Aadhaar as proof of identity for voter registration.

Congress leader Jairam Ramesh criticized the Election Commission, saying, “The Election Commission must be named and shamed for its brazen non-compliance with the Supreme Court’s directive to accept Aadhar as a proof of identity.”

The Supreme Court has reiterated for the third time that Aadhaar must be accepted as a valid ID to register voters. Despite this, the Election Commission has refused to recognize Aadhaar, creating obstacles for legitimate voters, he said.

Ramesh further alleged that the Election Commission is deliberately inconveniencing voters by refusing to recognize Booth Level Agents (BLAs) appointed by political parties and sending notices to officials to only accept prescribed documents.

“Repeated obstacles are being created by the Election Commission to deliberately inconvenience the registration of legitimate voters,” he said in a post on handle X.

Ramesh emphasized that the Election Commission’s inept handling of the electoral process has led to the current situation. “This is a mess of the Election Commission’s own making,” said Ramesh. He also criticized the Election Commission for not accepting Aadhaar and appointing its own officers instead of recognizing BLAs appointed by political parties.

Ramesh’s comments suggest that the party is fighting not just against the government but also against the Election Commission, which it alleges to be biased.
