The Congress on Tuesday dared Telangana chief minister K Chandrashekar Rao to ensure that Prime Minister Narendra Modi repeats his assurance to provide 12 per cent reservations for Muslims in education and jobs when he visits Hyderabad next week.

Modi is scheduled to visit the twin cities on 28 November for the inaugural of the Global Entrepreneurship Summit and the launch of the Hyderabad Modi.

Rao, earlier, this year enacted a law that would provide 12 per cent reservations to Muslims even though the total quota would go well over the 50 per cent level stipulated by the Supreme Court.

Telangana reservations, after the quota for Muslims, would stand at 54 per cent. The Congress government in 2005 provided four per cent quota for Muslims and Mr Rao in his 2014 campaign promised to deliver 12 per cent reservations.

During his speech in the recent Assembly session, Mr Rao claimed that Mr Modi was in favour of giving 12 per cent reservations.

“If the PM has really given such an assurance to Rao in private, then he should not have any hesitation in making a similar public announcement. If Rao is not lying, then he should convince Modi to announce that his government would approve the Muslim Reservation Bill”, minorities cell chairman Shaik Abdullah Sohail said.

He said that it is important to get Modi’s assurance as the Supreme Court recently directed the Rajasthan government to ensure that the 50 per cent cap is not crossed when that state made a provision for reservations for the Gujjar community.

The Congress has been repeatedly accusing Rao for attempting to mislead the Muslim community and reminded that they were realistic on the issue when they were in power.

Sohail said that the Congress would continue to keep sending reminders to Mr Rao till 2 June 2018, the fourth formation day of the state. “If the TRS government fails to implement 12 per cent reservations even then, the Congress would launch a massive agitation against it”, he said.
