The opposition Congress in Madhya Pradesh on Saturday accused the ruling BJP of forcing people, especially women, to attend a recent programme of CM Dr Mohan Yadav in Chhindwara district, after which a bus carrying people from the event met with an accident, leaving 11 persons dead.

Leader of Opposition (LoP) in MP Assembly, Umang Singhar, alleged that women were pressured to attend the CM’s programme, with threats that benefits under the ‘Laadli Behna Yojana’ would be stopped if they did not comply.

He questioned whether the government would probe the role of BJP workers or government officials who allegedly exerted such pressure.

Singhar also announced Rs 50,000 assistance on behalf of the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) for each family of the 11 persons killed in the bus accident two days ago.

The Congress has 65 MLAs in the 230-member state assembly.

Addressing a press conference in Bhopal, Singhar blamed the state government for the Chhindwara accident in which 11 persons were killed and 31 injured, three to four critically. Two of the injured are being treated in Nagpur, close to Chhindwara.

The bus was carrying people who had attended a public function of the Chief Minister.

On Friday, MP CM Dr Mohan Yadav announced additional ex gratia payment of Rs 4 lakh each to the next of kin of the deceased under the Sambal scheme, taking the total compensation to Rs 8 lakh per family.

On Thursday, the CM had already announced Rs 4 lakh assistance for families of those killed, and Rs 1 lakh for the seriously injured.
