In a stinging attack on the ruling Communist Party in Tripura, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday accused the CPM-led Left Front of indulging in violence and adhering to ‘gun tantra’ (gun culture) instead of ‘gantantra’ (republic).

Addressing a rally in poll-bound state’s capital Agartala, Modi said it was time people defeated the Manik Sarkar government, which has been in power for the last five consecutive terms in the northeastern state.

“The people of Tripura will not stand the Communist Party’s government anymore. Bid them such a farewell that they cannot think about returning to power again. The regime of corruption has to go,” said Modi in his rally in Shanti Bazar.

“Communist Party does not believe in gantantra… They only believe in violence and gun-tantra,” added Modi.

On a day-long visit to Arunachal Pradesh and Tripura, Modi, earlier in the day, took a dig at the Congress over what he said was leakage of funds meant for the poor during its rule.

Election will take place in Tripura on February 18 Assembly election and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is looking to unseat the Left government in the state.

If the trends ahead of the polls are any indication, the BJP is poised to put up its best performance ever in the northeastern state and while it may not win the polls but is likely to establish itself as the principal opposition party.
