Commitment to the people and the Constitution must always remain paramount, exhorts Vice President Radhakrishnan

Vice President CP Radhakrishnan said that the strength of India’s democracy lies not only in its constitutional institutions but equally in the quality of debates, the dignity of conduct and adherence to constitutional values.

“Therefore, commitment to the people and the Constitution must always remain paramount,” the Vice President said while addressing the valedictory session of the “Vidhayi Gaurav Yatra: Former and Sitting Members’ Conclave” organised as part of the Rajasthan Assembly’s Amrit Mahotsav celebrations here on Wednesday evening.

Rajasthan Governor Haribhau Bagade, Punjab Governor Gulab Chand Kataria, Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma, Assembly Speaker Vasudev Devnani, and more than 360 sitting and former MLAs were present on the occasion.

The Vice President observed that differences of opinion are natural in a democracy, but commitment to the people and the Constitution must always remain paramount.

“We may agree to disagree, but we must all remain committed to the people and the Constitution. Our unwavering commitment to the people and the Constitution should always remain unshaken,” Radhakrishnan said.

Recalling his message to members of the Rajya Sabha, he added, “Debate, discussion or even, at times, disruption must ultimately lead to a decision.”

He reiterated that the strength of Indian democracy lies not only in its constitutional institutions but also in the quality of debates, the dignity of conduct and adherence to constitutional values.

Congratulating everyone on the Diamond Jubilee celebrations of the Rajasthan Legislative Assembly, Radhakrishnan said that State Legislatures are the living heartbeat of Indian democracy. However, he reminded legislators that while winning elections is important, serving the people is even more important.

He noted that the lasting respect of the people is earned through integrity, humility and dedicated public service.

Paying tribute to Rajasthan’s rich legacy of sacrifice, courage and patriotism, the Vice President said that every generation of the State has strengthened the nation’s democratic ethos. He noted that democracy flourishes when people deliberate with dignity and place the national interest above every other consideration.

Recalling his long association with Rajasthan’s political leadership, Radhakrishnan said he had the privilege of working with former Chief Ministers Bhairon Singh Shekhawat and Vasundhara Raje. He also acknowledged the contribution of former Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot to the State’s democratic journey.

The Vice President fondly remembered his association with former Union Minister Rajesh Pilot, father of AICC General Secretary and former Rajasthan Deputy Chief Minister Sachin Pilot, during his tenure as a Member of the Lok Sabha.

Invoking Rajasthan’s glorious history, the Vice President said history can never forget Maharana Pratap, but it also remembers the unmatched loyalty and sacrifice of his trusted horse, Chetak. He said every individual, irrespective of the role they hold, has an opportunity to leave behind a lasting legacy through sincerity and dedication.

Assembly Speaker Vasudev Devnani delivered the welcome address. Governor Haribhau Bagade and Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma also addressed the gathering.

The Vice President also honoured former Speakers, former Deputy Speakers, and former as well as sitting Members of the Rajasthan Legislative Assembly in recognition of their contributions to the State’s rich democratic and legislative tradition.
