Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is on a day-long visit to Arunachal Pradesh and poll-bound Tripura, participated in three programmes in AP, including the inauguration of the Dorjee Khandu state convention centre in Itanagar.

Reacting to the development, China today voiced its “firm opposition” to the visit of Prime Minister Modi to Arunachal Pradesh which it claims as part of South Tibet and said it would lodge a diplomatic protest with India.

Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Geng Shuang, reportedly, said that the Chinese government didn’t recognise the ‘so-called’ Arunachal Pradesh and is firmly opposed to the visit of Indian prime minister to the disputed area.

“China’s position on the China-India boundary question is consistent and clear-cut. The Chinese government has never recognised the so-called Arunachal Pradesh and is firmly opposed to the Indian leader’s visit to the disputed area,” Mr Geng was quoted as saying by state-run Xinhua news agency.

“We will lodge stern representations with the Indian side,” he said.

Meanwhile, PM Modi reached Arunachal Pradesh earlier today and addressed a rally. He also inaugurated a convention centre in Itanagar.

Later in the day, Modi travelled to Tripura where he is expected to address two rallies ahead of the February 18 Assembly election. The BJP is looking to unseat the Left government in the state.
