Chhattisgarh to mark Birsa Munda’s 150th birth anniversary with Tribal Pride Day celebrations

Chhattisgarh will observe the 150th birth anniversary of Bhagwan Birsa Munda as Tribal Pride Day on November 15 with commemorative events scheduled across all districts.

The state government has directed district administrations to organise programmes reflecting the cultural, historical and social legacy of tribal communities, with ministers, MPs and MLAs attending as chief guests. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s address will be broadcast live at all venues through official channels, while the chief minister’s message will be read out during the proceedings. Short films on flagship initiatives such as PM Janman, Aadi Karmayogi, and Dharti Aaba will also be screened.

Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai will preside over the main state level ceremony in Jagdalpur, where Forest Minister Kedar Kashyap and MLA Kiran Singh Deo will join as special guests. District-wise programmes will feature senior members of the state cabinet and Parliament: Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Sharma will attend in Durg, Deputy Chief Minister Arun Sao in Bilaspur; Union Minister of State Tokhan Sahu in Raipur, and Speaker Dr. Raman Singh in Rajnandgaon.

Agriculture Minister Ramvichar Netam will lead the Balrampur event, while Food Minister Dayaldas Baghel will participate in Bemetara. Health Minister Shyam Bihari Jaiswal will be present in Manendragarh–Chirmiri–Bharatpur, Industry Minister Lakhan Lal Dewangan in Korba, Revenue Minister Tank Ram Verma in Raigarh, Finance Minister O P Choudhary in Surguja, Women and Child Development Minister Laxmi Rajwade in Janjgir–Champa, Skill and Technical Education Minister Guru Khushwant Saheb in Mahasamund, School Education Minister Gajendra Yadav in Kanker, and Tourism and Culture Minister Rajesh Agrawal in Korea.

Several MPs will also take part as chief guests: Brijmohan Agrawal in Balodabazar–Bhatapara, Chintamani Maharaj in Surajpur, Vijay Baghel in Khairagarh–Chhuikhadan–Gandai, Santosh Pandey in Kabirdham, Bhojraj Nag in Balod, Roopkumari Choudhary in Gariaband, Radheshyam Rathiya in Jashpur, Kamlesh Jangde in Sakti, Mahesh Kashyap in Bijapur, and Devendra Pratap Singh (Rajya Sabha) in Sarangarh–Bilaigarh. In other districts, MLAs will represent the government, including Domanlal Korsewada in Mohla–Manpur–Chowki, Ajay Chandrakar in Dhamtari, Lata Usendi in Kondagaon, Punnulal Mohle in Mungeli, Vikram Usendi in Narayanpur, Neelkanth Tekam in Sukma, Chaitram Atami in Dantewada, and Pranav Kumar Marpachchi in Gaurela–Pendra–Marwahi.

As part of the celebrations, families of tribal freedom fighters, eminent members of the tribal community and meritorious students will be felicitated. Exhibitions showcasing tribal art, cuisine, handicrafts and welfare schemes will be on display at district venues, alongside interactive sessions with beneficiaries. Schools and residential institutions across Chhattisgarh will conduct special activities to commemorate the occasion.

With several large-scale events planned and participation from the state’s senior leadership, the observance of Tribal Pride Day is expected to highlight Chhattisgarh’s deep cultural roots and reaffirm its commitment to honouring the legacy of Bhagwan Birsa Munda, one of India’s most revered icons of tribal identity and resistance.
