In a significant development that could benefit a large number of farmers in Punjab, the Union government on Thursday withdrew the notification of a draft rule that divested tractor of its status as non transport vehicle.

The move was confirmed by Union Food Processing Industry minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal, in a press statement, who thanked the Union Road Transport and Highways minister Nitin Gadkari for acceding to her request to withdraw the notification in this regard.

Harsimrat Kaur said the move would be a big relief to farmers across the nation, particularly so in Punjab where farmers were in the midst of an agrarian crisis. She also accused the Congress government failing to implement its Rs 90,000 Crore loan waiver promise.

She said farmers had also been saved from additional registration fee besides the need to acquire permits and a host of other conditions.
