Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar formally assumed the Chairship of the Council of Member States of the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA) for 2026, signaling a landmark global recognition for India’s Election Commission (ECI).
In his acceptance speech in Stockholm, CEC Kumar emphasized a forward-looking agenda focused on strengthening electoral integrity worldwide, declaring, “India’s Chairmanship will be decisive, ambitious and action oriented.”
This Chairship marks a significant milestone, acknowledging the ECI as one of the most credible and innovative Election Management Bodies (EMBs) globally. As a founding member of International IDEA, India aims to leverage its vast democratic experience to influence the organization’s global initiatives.
Under the theme “Democracy for inclusive, peaceful, resilient and sustainable world,” India’s leadership will focus on two key pillars: reimagining democracy for the future and promoting independent, professional election management bodies for sustainable democracy.
Highlighting India’s massive democratic exercise, the CEC detailed the scale of the 2024 General Elections, noting the involvement of over 900 million voters across 28 states and 8 Union Territories, more than 20,000 candidates, and over 20 million election personnel. He pledged to share not only India’s logistical expertise but also its enduring democratic values rooted in its civilizational heritage. “India envisions sharing the learnings of the world’s largest, most diverse and inclusive democracy, along with democratic principles deeply enshrined in its heritage,” he stated.
The Chief Election Commissioner assured that through collaborative efforts among democratic nations, his tenure will work to enhance transparency and strengthen democratic processes globally.
India’s Ambassador to Sweden, Anurag Bhushan, accompanied CEC Kumar, who also held discussions with International IDEA’s Secretary-General, Dr. Kevin Casas-Zamora.
Mauritius and Mexico will join India as Vice-Chairs of the International IDEA Council in 2026.
