The CBI has sought 14-day custody of Karti Chidambaram, arrested in the INX Media money laundering case, and is likely to question his father and former Finance Minister P Chidambaram as well.

As hearing in the case began in the Patiala House Court on Thursday, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) reiterated that Karti was not cooperating in the probe and has been repeatedly going out of the country, hindering the interrogation.

Therefore, the agency sought 14-day custody of the former finance minister’s son.

Reports also suggested that the investigative agency was likely to question P Chidambaram as well for his role in granting Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) approval to INX Media in 2007 when he was the union finance minister during the previous UPA regime.

Karti allegedly received Rs 3.5 crore from the Mumbai-based INX Media, now known as 9X Media, for helping it get FIPB clearance, when it was run by Peter and Indrani Mukerjea, both accused in the Sheena Bora murder case.

He was arrested by the CBI from Chennai airport on his return from abroad on Wednesday and later in the evening, was remanded to one-day custody of the CBI by the court.

The arrest of Karti came nine months after the CBI registered a FIR against him on charges of criminal conspiracy, cheating, accepting gratification by corrupt or illegal means, influencing public servants and criminal misconduct.

After his arrest in Chennai, CBI officials took him to Delhi by afternoon. He was taken to the CBI headquarters and then produced before a Duty Magistrate.

On Thursday, the court reserved its order on the bail plea filed by S Bhaskararaman, Karti’s Chartered Accountant (CA). He will stay in jail till March 7.

Bhaskararaman, arrested from a five-star hotel in Delhi, had moved a plea seeking bail before the court on Wednesday.
