AHMEDABAD, 21 SEPT: Two senior IAS and IPS officers were questioned today by a CBI team investigating the 2004 Ishrat Jehan fake encounter case.
A team from the CBI&’s Mumbai office quizzed IPS officer A K Sharma and IAS officer G C Murmu for over an hour in connection with their roles in trying to deflate the probe into the fake encounter case.
The CBI had on Friday quizzed suspended encounter specialist IPS D G Vanzara inside the Sabarmati Central Jail here.
While many IPS officers are in jail and have been interrogated in connection with half a dozen fake encounter cases in Gujarat, Mr Murmu is the first IAS officer to be quizzed by the CBI.
The CBI questioned the two IAS and IPS officers regarding the audio tapes another IPS officer G L Singhal, currently on bail, had handed over to the CBI.
The audio tapes had allegedly recorded conversations between Minister of State for Home Praful Patel, IPS officer Singhal himself, State Advocate General Kamal Trivedi, Principal Secretary G C Murmu, Minister of State for Law Pradipsinh Jadeja and another accused police officer Tarun Barot. The then Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime Branch), Mr A K Sharma was also present at the meeting on 19 November, 2011 when a strategy to weaken the probe into the case was being chalked out.
