As the Unnao rape survivor’s accident case reached the Supreme Court amid massive uproar by the Opposition, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has registered a case against suspended BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar and nine others accused in the case.

The CBI has also registered a case against 20 unknown persons under criminal conspiracy, murder, attempt to murder and criminal intimidation.

The Uttar Pradesh government had sent a formal request to the Government of India to transfer the Unnao rape survivor’s road accident case to the probe agency.

Uttar Pradesh Director General of Police OP Singh had earlier said that the state government was ready for a CBI probe into the accident if a request was made by the family of the victim.

The UP government had also set up a Special Investigation Team (SIT) into the case on Tuesday.

Earlier on Monday, an FIR was registered against Sengar, his brother Manoj Sengar and eight others in the accident case. The FIR was registered on basis of the complaint given by the rape survivor’s uncle Mahesh Singh, who is lodged in Rae Bareli jail.

The woman from Unnao, who had accused BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar of raping her in 2017, was severely injured while two of her aunts were killed after their car collided with a truck near Raebareli in Uttar Pradesh on Sunday.

The rape survivor and her family members were on their way to meet her uncle in jail when the collision occurred.

The mother of the rape survivor has claimed a “conspiracy” by the accused BJP MLA to “to eliminate the family” as the truck that collided with the car had a number plate that was blackened.

The Unnao rape case hit the headlines in 2017 after the then 16-year-old girl alleged that she was raped by BJP MLA Sengar.

Sengar has been in jail since the past several months while the case is being probed by the CBI. Sengar’s brother has also been accused of beating up the victim’s father after tying him to a tree. Her father was then arrested and later died in police custody.

One of the deceased in the Sunday accident, Pushpa Singh, was a witness in the rape case against BJP MLA Kuldeep Sengar.

Even as political parties battle over the accident in Rae Bareli, the condition of the girl remains ‘highly critical’ and was put on ventilator support.

Her lawyer Mahendra Singh has been on ventilator ever since he was brought to the Trauma Centre on Sunday evening, hours after the accident.
