The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Friday said that they have brought back a fugitive criminal from the UAE who was on the run in connection with a cheating cum criminal case of Uttarakhand.

The accused Jagdish Punetha will now be handed over to the Uttarakhand Police.

His return was possible with the collaboration of MEA and MHA. This collaboration successfully coordinated the return of wanted fugitive Jagdish Punetha from the UAE, said the official.

The official said that Jagdish was wanted by Uttarakhand Police. An FIR was lodged against him at Pithoragarh Police Station on the allegation of cheating and criminal conspiracy.

He had fled to the UAE. The CBI coordinated with UAE authorities to locate the subject and apprehend him.

“Earlier, the CBI got the Red Notice published against Jagdish Punetha through INTERPOL on May 6 on the request of Uttarakhand Police. A team of the Uttarakhand Police visited the UAE to bring back the subject and arrived in India with the subject from the UAE on November 13 at New Delhi,” said the official.

“Red Notices published by INTERPOL are circulated to all Law Enforcement Agencies globally for tracking of the wanted fugitives. CBI, as the National Central Bureau for INTERPOL in India, coordinates with all Law Enforcement Agencies in India through BHARATPOL for assistance via INTERPOL channels,” the CBI said.

More than 150 wanted criminals have been returned to India in the last few years through coordination via INTERPOL channels.
