Renowned carnatic vocalist M Balamuralikrishna, who was awarded with Padma Vibhushan for his immense contribution, passed away at the age of 86 in Chennai.
The veteran vocalist breathed his last on Tuesday at his home in Kanakasri Nagar, his family confirmed.
Although Balamuralikrishna was known for his magical voice and melodious compositions, he acted in a few films as well. He resided in Chennai for a longer time of his life and mastered all the 72 melakartha ragas and composed related kritis here at an early age.
He composed more than 400 songs in various Indian languages such as Sanskrit, Kannada, Telugu and Tamil. His acting career was decorated with his much appreciated performance in films like Bhakta Prahlada, Oru Naal Podhuma and Thiruvilaiyadal Thiruvilaiyadal.
Having promoted Carnatic music internationally, Balamurali was awarded with the ‘Chevalier of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres’ by the French Government in 2005.
