Amid the public outrage over Durgapur gang-rape incident, West Bengal Governor C V Ananda Bose on Monday called for a “second renaissance” to make the state safe for girls.
Addressing a press briefing in Paschim Bardhaman, Bose said the gang-rape of a medical student is “shocking to public conscience”.
“It is high time that all of us stand together and say, ‘stop or we will make it stop’. We will do everything to give justice to the family,” he said.
The Bengal Governor said that he has spoken to the victim, a resident of Odisha and her parents bt refused to divulge the details about their discussion.
Calling upon the state police and administration, Bose urged them to “do everything possible to bring justice to the victim and to ensure that such things do not repeat in Bengal society in future.”
Noting that the incident was not the first of its kind and the state had witnessed similar experiences innthe past as well, Bose said that he can’t say with confidence that the West Bengal is safe.
“Bengal society led to the renaissance of this nation. We want a second renaissance here. Bengal should be made safe for the girl child. I cannot say with confidence that Bengal is safe,” he remarked.
The Governor said that he met the victim as he wanted to come to ground zero and understand the suffering of the people affected.
“Now I have an idea of what exactly happened and how it should be tackled. We will take all steps to ensure that justice is done, and this is not repeated in future,” he added.
