In a disturbing incident that has raised concerns over internal discipline and conflict management within security forces, a Chhattisgarh Armed Force (CAF) jawan was shot dead by a colleague inside a battalion camp in Khairagarh district on Sunday night.
The incident took place at the CAF battalion camp in Ghaghra village. According to police, the victim, Sonveer Jat— a native of Uttar Pradesh posted at the camp—was asleep when another jawan, Arvind Gautam, allegedly opened fire on him. Preliminary investigations suggest that the two had been at odds for some time over a personal dispute, which is believed to have led to the fatal shooting.
The sound of gunfire created panic within the camp. Fellow personnel rushed the injured jawan to Khairagarh Civil Hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival. Officials stated that he had sustained critical gunshot injuries, leaving little scope for medical intervention.
Upon receiving information, police arrived at the camp, registered a case, and initiated legal proceedings. The body has been sent for post-mortem, which will be conducted after the arrival of the deceased’s family members, who have been informed.
The accused jawan has been arrested and is currently being held at Gatapar police station. A case of murder has been registered, and further investigation is underway to establish the exact sequence of events and the circumstances leading to the shooting.
