In a rare show of appreciation, the Union Cabinet on Wednesday passed a resolution applauding Prime Minister Narendra Modi after he became India’s longest-serving elected Prime Minister in consecutive terms, completing 4,399 days in office. Cabinet members also gave a standing ovation to the Prime Minister during the meeting.
The milestone places PM Modi ahead of former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, who had served 4,398 consecutive days after India’s first general election. The achievement marks another landmark in PM Modi’s political journey, which began with his swearing-in as Prime Minister in May 2014 and continued through successive mandates.

PM Modi reflects on public service and governance
Soon after reaching the milestone, PM Modi called public service the true measure of governance and leadership. Sharing a Sanskrit shloka on X, he highlighted humility, dedication, and a sense of duty as essential qualities for earning public confidence.
“Public service is the biggest test of good governance. Only a person who works continuously with humility, dedication and dutifulness earns public trust,” PM Modi posted.
He also shared the Sanskrit verse: “Sadanuraktprakritih prajapalantatparh. Vineetatma hi Nripatirbhuyasi Shriyamashnute (Who is always devoted to the care of the people. A king who is humble attains greater prosperity).”
Leaders across sectors extend congratulations
The achievement triggered congratulatory messages from NDA leaders, global dignitaries and personalities from different fields.
