The Union Cabinet Friday approved the continuation of a targeted subsidy for Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana consumers for the financial year 2025-26, Union Minister of Information and Broadcasting Ashwini Vaishnaw said. The subsidy amounts to Rs 300 per 14.2 kg cylinder for up to 9 refills per year, with a proportionate rate for 5 kg cylinders, at an expenditure of Rs 12,000 crore.

The minister said that the subsidy aims to shield PMUY beneficiaries from sharp fluctuations in international LPG prices and make LPG more affordable, ensuring sustained usage.

Launched in May 2016, PMUY provides deposit-free LPG connections to adult women from poor households across the country. As of July 1, this year, there are approximately 10.33 crore PMUY connections.

PMUY beneficiaries receive a deposit-free LPG connection, including a security deposit, pressure regulator, safety hose, and installation charges. The first refill and stove are also provided free of cost.

The targeted subsidy will benefit millions of PMUY beneficiaries, promoting the use of clean cooking fuel and improving their quality of life. The average per capita consumption of PMUY consumers has already shown an upward trend, increasing from 3 refills in 2019-20 to 4.47 refills in 2024-25.

The minister said that the government’s objective is to make LPG more affordable for PMUY consumers, who are vulnerable to price fluctuations.

He said that by providing a targeted subsidy, the government aims to ensure that these households continue to use LPG as a clean cooking fuel, reducing their dependence on traditional fuels.
